What is a scientific journal quartile?

In Scopus, it is calculated on the basis of the SJR (SCImago Journal Rank) indicator, and in Web of Science, by JIF (Journal Impact Factor). According to these indicators, journals are divided into four groups (quartiles):
- Q1 (first quartile) – the most prestigious and highest-ranked publications, which are included in the top 25% of the list of the best journals in their field
- Q2 (second quartile) – high-quality journals that occupy positions from 25% to 50% in the overall ranking of scientific publications
- Q3 (third quartile) – mid-level publications with moderate citation and scientific impact indicators in their field
- Q4 (fourth quartile) – new or less influential journals that belong to the bottom 25% of the list of the best publications
Which journal quartile should be chosen for the first publication?
The choice of a journal by quartile depends on several factors, in particular on the author’s level of preparation, the subject area of the research, the purpose of the publication, or the requirements of a higher educational institution or organisation.
For the first publication of research in Scopus or Web of Science, we recommend choosing a journal of the third or fourth quartile (Q3 or Q4). Usually, the queues for publication in such journals are shorter than in Q1 and Q2 publications. Q3 and Q4 scientific journals have less stringent requirements for materials, which increases the chances of acceptance for publication.
This is also an advantage for young scientists who are only beginning their publication activity in international journals. Publication in third- and fourth-quartile journals will give scientists an opportunity to understand how the peer-review process takes place, how communication with the editorial office is conducted, and so on.
